B.A. Visual Communications
I choose to portray my emotions through three senses: kinesthetic (hula hooping), visual (illustration), and auditory (music). The relationship between these three is part of my flow. I start with one and flow into the next like pool of descending water. I am interpreting feelings through different mediums. I flow from my brain to my body to your eyes and ears to understand. Flow is the truest form of self-expression; it holds no boundaries and is completely personal. It is serene and mindless, for it is not possible to force flow. I chose to express myself through hoop flow. The hoop or the circle represents infinity.
The illusion of time is immediately related to self-expression. Visual art and music in relation to time are opposites. Visual art only exists in the present moment. The time in which you are viewing a piece of art only exists in that instant, as soon as you walk away, that moment is over. Music only exists in the future and in the past. It has no reference without time. You cannot take a snapshot of sound, the same way you cannot take a snapshot of hooping because you cannot capture movement in a single shot. The flow of hooping is intimately tied with music. Hooping is a product of music; I hoop to visually convey how I understand and feel the music.
