Lauren Feusahrens

B.F.A. Painting

My work is about creating space; about using calligraphic lines to bring my experiences, memories and emotions to the canvas. I challenge myself with composition, making decisions on the canvas and then discovering how to make these forms interact with the rest of the space. Working with sumi ink, I have been inspired by the immediate and permanent nature of the medium. Each mark must be important and confident. You can see any hesitation or doubt on the paper. You have one chance to control the brush and create what you imagine. If executed properly, you can make a statement about yourself at the exact time the work was created. My work is a dichotomy between this ancient Japanese calligraphy and the current social temperature. I have become more connected to my work by letting my emotions become part of my paintings. My present mood and concerns are no longer their own entity, but a part of myself placed on the canvas. My paintings have become a visual journal, cataloging the person I am at the moment they are created. While my work may be minimalistic, I believe that powerful work does not need to be made by a tremendous or tedious effort, but created through a clear, concentrated mind.

Most of my life has been surrounded around physical activities, like sports. My paintings draw on this physicality in a contemplative, spiritual way. During my time at Salisbury University I have competed on the Women’s Lacrosse team.  Some feel the combination of sports and art is like oil and water.  I do not agree, as sports require vision and creativity to be successful on the field.  This experience has also given me a sense of resilience.   To set a goal of winning a national championship, to work for months on and off the field to make it happen, to win the final game gives you a strong sense of confidence in your own abilities.  My 2013 solo show entitled “An Exploration: Molokini” was based on my story of self-discovery and perseverance.  Now that my lacrosse career has come to an end, I know that what I have learned about hard work and determination will translate to the studio.
