The inspiration for my work comes from subjects found in everyday life. The people I choose to draw have a personal significance to me. I want the viewers to see part of who I am when they see my work. In the digital world that we live in today, pictures are easily taken and shared daily. I specifically look to recreate amateur photos that have by chance captured a moment full of emotion and feeling. I utilize the snap-shot composition of these amateur photographs in my drawings because I want to emphasize the atmospheric energy of that particular time. I want the viewer to feel that very same energy captured by that snap shot.
I create realistic works in a modern, abstracted, colorful style. My composition is made up of blocky, flat objects that come together to create a three-dimensional arrangement. I was inspired to depict detail this way by Jackson Pollock. Instead of dripping and splattering paint, I use the motion of my hand with pastels to create strategically placed, yet spontaneously drawn lines. Abstract expressionist Robert Motherwell believed that through past art we can learn what qualities are eternally valuable and what values exist in any time and space. My art reflects timeless subjects that can be appreciated by any audience in any time and place.
